ARTIST STATEMENTBACK TO GALLERY
Allie Kushnir is an artist whose practice is grounded in sustainability, ethical lifestyle choices and environmental advocacy. She uses mixed media works on paper and sculptural forms to examine the complicated intersection of human consumption and environmental justice. Change and growth can germinate from such small gestures, an outlook that is reflected in Kushnir’s practice.
She begins with small-scale mixed media studies of soft forms and quick strokes that blend and bleed into intriguing combinations. From these, Kushnir hardens her intuitive moves into individual laser cut pieces that come together into a jigsaw of formal cohabitation. Complex color relations and incongruent formal pairings enliven her compositions with friction and tension. As her initial gestural acts take weight and harden into their final iteration, the activist undertow of Kushnir’s ethical work seems to vibrate between the shapes and lines asking one to consider the act of accumulation and the power of every choice.
